When I saw this coat pattern in the October 2012 issue of BurdaStyle, I decided to give it a try.

I have my black peplum sweater and autumn leaves clutch to finish in order to complete this look. If you remember I said I wanted to re-create the outfit from my "A stroll through the park in Autumn" set that I made on Polyvore.

I took the pictures here on my porch because the weather is utterly nasty out there. We have had over 10 inches of rain, and the wind is really starting to pick up out there. Sandy is almost upon us.
My thoughts are with all of you out there who are enduring this storm. Hang in there!

ReplyDeleteThank you Shirley Ann :-) I will be wearing this coat tomorrow night when I take the kids out to trick-or-treat. I think it works for the occasion! ;-) The fabric I used is a medium weight wool that I actually found on Amazon.com! I wanted a certain shade of orange, and I could not find it in my usual shopping sites online...so I decided to look at Amazon. That is where I found it. Here is the link to the exact fabric I used.

Amy, is it complicated to line a coat? I have never lined anything...can you believe it! I have an Ottobre pattern that I'm going to make for for one of my daughters as soon as I get the fabric in the mail; it's a dress jumper that has a lining, so I guess I will learn soon. LOL Just curious if I would be able to make a coat since it is something I haven't ever done.
DeleteIt is not hard at all. It is like making a duplicate of the outer shell of the garment, and attaching it inside. It is usually simpler construction as well. Let me know how it goes with your Ottobre pattern. You should have no problems at all putting it together. I know you can do it. :-)
DeleteI forgot to add, that there are a lot of tutorials out there to help you along the way if you are unsure of something. If I ever get stuck on something I always check it out on google to see what I can find. I have some construction/flat pattern/ draping classes coming up in the spring, and I look forward to learning more. I have already had some, but now it is getting into more advanced garment construction.

DeleteI absolutely adore your coat- great style and color! I wanted to attempt to make my first coat (same cute pattern) but have never used a pattern from a pdf. Do I tape the pages and then cut and pin them to the fabric (like the tissue ones) and then add an extra 5/8" all around when cutting it out? thanks much!
ReplyDeleteIf you are using the print out, then you tape all the pieces together (it reminds me of putting together a big puzzle) from there you can trace the pieces onto tracing paper and add your seam allowance, or you can just add your seam allowance to the print out pieces, then cut them out, and place on your fabric. This would also reduce fabric waste. I traced my pieces onto tracing paper for this coat, because I had the actual magazine and used the pattern inside. I think it would be much easier to use the PDF. When you look at the patterns inside the magazine, there are multiple patterns on one sheet. You have to find the right lines to trace. When I pulled the pattern out to get to work tracing it, my family said "Oh my gosh!!" because it looks very confusing! LOL. They give you directions on how to find the lines you will be using, but it is still pretty crazy to look at! Have you ever used the patterns inside BurdaStyle magazine?? If not, let me know. I will post a picture from a portion of one of the sheets so you can see what it looks like. It is pretty interesting.

DeleteHi Amy- Thanks much for your advice! I think it makes sense to add the seam allowance to the printout- so will give that a try. Oh yes, someone showed my the Burda patterns from her magazine a while back. Really scary and confusing!! You really need to be focused for that- no interruptions or thinking about other things ;-) kudos to you. Thanks for your encouragement!
DeleteI hope you had a safe and fun Halloween all decked out in your new orange coat. Halloween was pretty much cancelled here in Manhattan- no thanks to Sandy- but I did see a few cute kids with their pumpkin buckets.
The pictures I have seen of the damage in NY and NJ is horrible. It is going to take a long time, and some serious cash to repair everything. I feel so sad for all the people who lost everything. :-( Sandy was a real sneaky stinker of a storm. Here we pretty much were thinking we were in the clear, and no hurricanes would hit us this season. We were wrong. We had fun last night with the kids, but I could not help but think of all the little ones up your way who's holiday was ruined. I did see some fantastic pictures of the red cross giving out costumes, doing makeup, and handing out treats to the kids. That made me tear up.

This is a beautiful coat and I love the color! I saw this on Sew & Tell Saturday, and I just had to come look. I'm your newest follower. I have never sewn a coat, but I think that should be next on my to do list! Do you think this coat would be hard for an advanced beginner/intermediate sewist?

DeleteI think you would be ok giving this pattern a try. My suggestion would be to make a muslin first, to check the fit, and also to "test the waters" so to speak. This is always a good idea for any garment really, but with expensive coating fabrics, I think it is a GREAT idea. That way you don't cut into your good expensive fabric, and then find something is off or wrong etc. I know the pattern does not have seam allowances included, so you will need to add those after you print the PDF out. Just take your time creating your coat, and have a good time with it :-) I am sure you will do fine!
